We all know very well that our planet is not doing well. We produce too much everything. And most of all - we are so incredibly selfish. For example, in Finland one of the world's wealthiest countries we throw 10-15% off food straight to the trash. We are so used to just say: "Oops sell-by date has passed but what does it matter!" And then we just throw it away.
In Finland we are (at least I think that most of us) used to go grocery shopping in supermarkets. There is so much food everywhere you look and people get large shopping carts full of food. But who can really eat all that they buy? At least in my family we always have to throw something to the trash because we have bought too much food. I guess that everyone know what I am talking about.
Like I said there has been recently much talk about food wastage in the media. That has made me (and many others all over the world) to think more about our food wastage. It has even become a trend that food is made of residues.
So what can you do to diminish your (and your family's) food wastage:
- Go shopping with your parents and make them see that there is no point to shop so much if they have a habit to throw away food.
- Make a clear shopping list before you go shopping and do not go shopping when you are hungry.
- When you see that there is some leftovers (like meat sauce or mashed potatoes) then try to create something of them. For example a good sauce is great on top of a sandwich and bread can be made out of mashed potatoes.
- Do not eat with your eyes. If you know that you do not want to eat much then do not take much food. There is always an opportunity to get some more.
- Remember that you are very blessed to have food every day. There are too many people all over the world who are starving and dying of hunger.
I agree with you. I have read an article of student who gets hes food from supermarkets trash cans. Im not ready to go that far, but i really want to change my familys shopping habits. Because we are one of those families which throws food a way every week.
ReplyDeleteBut in summers we grow our own potatoes, carrots and etc. So then we dont have to buy vegetables from supermarkets.
I also liked that soup idea of yours I have to try it someday.
I think you are right. There are many ways to solve this problem. But solving the problem all of us must to change our consumption habits. You told some very good way to change our shopping habits. At least our family would have lots of to learn your tips. And I suppose that our family is not only one.
ReplyDeleteThis is very big problem in the world because the food we produce is not divided equally to everybody. Poor countries have too little food and we on the other hand have so much food that we dare to throw it on the trash.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to think about how much we really need food and leave the rest of it in the store. We could feed much more people with the food we throw on the trash and I think it's so sad!
DeleteThis is so true and it's a thing that would be very easy to fix but of course we humans are so selfish, as you said and lazy on our minds that we don't think clearly enough to avoid this problem. We just go and buy useless food that we then just leave in the fridge until it gets old. I have to admit that also I sometimes throw food away. Of course almost everybody have some time done it in their life but throwing food away constantly is just awful and very useless. We are always told that "eat everything, the poor kids in Africa are not getting food at all". We all have surely heard it about thousand times, and unfortunately not so many people are taking it serious anymore, even if they should because it's actually very much true. It's great and such a happy thing that we in Finland have pure and good food to eat, so let's be grateful and not throw away the treasure that is maybe for some of us a no-brainer, but to some other an everyday-question of life and death.
ReplyDeleteI really hope that this problem is going to be solved during the next few years. The real problem is that people produce too much food because we trhow so much away. Our planet is not going to keep up with this speed and sooner or later it will give up. And I just wonder what are we going to do when our planet is so dry, salty and ruend that nothing grows there anymore?
ReplyDeleteIt's so stupid that in rich countries like in Finland food is throwed away. For example in Africa people are starving of hunger everyday and they would be very pleased if they got food whether the food is 'old' or not.
ReplyDeleteFood wastage is a huge problem to solve and our generation should do something about it very quickly. Even the little baby steps would help if everybody did something. Me, myself, I am really trying to avoid throwing the food away and that's why I don't care if the food is a couple day old off the best-sell day. I for example can drink an 'old' milk and some other unfresh products.
I agree that Finland throws too much food away. I think it would good idea to give food to poor countries because they don't have that much food and they would need it more. I try also not to throw food away.
ReplyDeleteThis was a real eye opener! I didn't know what people throw that much food away. People should start thinking about the environment and how their eating habits affects it. I also liked your tips on how to shop.
