Cell phones

New cell phones are released nowadays on almost monthly basis. Big corporations compete for the consumers' money by trying to add more and more exciting features into packages as small as possible making them pleasing to the eye. But at what cost?

An average owner of a cell phone uses it for about year and a half before changing to a new one. The old phone can then be sold forward or recycled to save energy and resources required in the making of new phones. However, some phones are forgotten in desk drawers while others may end up in dumps. This is a pity, because phones contain valuable metals as well as heavy metals which pollute the soil and water when they are discarded improperly. If more phones were recycled, their price might drop a bit, because the rare metals they include could be put in good use, and the companies wouldn't have to buy so much of them.

Personally, I don't like to change my phone very often. I've had the same Nokia 2610 for nearly five years now, and it still works like a charm. I want to see how far I'll get with it before it dies completely. :) Plus, I have saved hundreds of euros by now. I recommend it to others as well, the money can then be placed into something you really desire.

  1. New cell phones are released too often. In the past ten years phones have been developed hugely. Ten years ago Nokia 3510i was the coolest phone ever! Nowadays you can have all kind of apps on your phone and you can even surf on the internet. You don't need computer anymore. It leads to huge rising of phones price.
Phones can cost even 900 euros! I think it's crazy.

  2. I have had 3 phones and now im using my 4th phone. Usually i use phones so long that phones battery brakes or the phone itself brakes. I also think that is crazy that people by phones just for fun. In my opinion it isnt smart to by a new phone every couble of years.
Like Katariina said that phones had been developed hugely. I think it is a good thing, but it isnt nice that if you want to have good, modern phone you have pay a lot of money of it. And one more sad thing of modern phone is that they broke so easily...
So it could be smart to think do you really nead a new phone if you old phone is still alive. Like Panu said you can save a lot of money if you dont buy those new phones every two years.

  3. I agree with you that new cell phones are released too often. When new cell phone comes to market, its price is approximately 900 euros and then when you wait that certain time you can get that same phone half price. I think that's crazy. I have had about 4 phones and i have used them at least 2 years.
Before the phones were much stronger than nowadays. If drop your phone, its broken. But when you drop your old phone, you don't really care if it goes broken because it is old phone.

  4. Indeed. Another good thing I like about older phones is that their batteries can last really long without recharging, even up to two weeks! Nowadays the owner of a smartphone may have to recharge their phone every two or three days, maybe even more often.

  5. I have had my current phone Nokia 5800 XpressMusic for about three years now. It has a touch screen, though it is kind a primitive; but it passes me for now. My phone is a good one and I wouldn't buy a new one unless my phone broke.

I think it's foolish that people change their cell phones too often. It just litters the environment because some phones end up to a trash can. If people don't stop buying new phones so often, that will cost to our environment a great price.

  6. I totally agree! My stepfather asked me if I would like to have a smartphone. I was shocked. No way! :D I hate having everything in my phone (internet, all the applications..). I just wonder what would I do with so smart phone? I just don't like spending my time with my phone...it feels like a waste of time. But I understand that someone are more clever than me when it comes to phones and I admit that they can be very nice and usefull to someone.

  7. Well I guess there are many different opinions to this topic. Like Ronja said, she would hate to have Internet and all other applications in her phone, but I don't see it that way. I love to have all that in my phone because that really helps me daily. I don't need to use my broken laptop anymore, because I can check everything I need from my phone. I have almost everything important in my smartphone; my calender, workouts, Internet, camera and all the pictures, all the songs I listen to and much more. I admit that nowadays those phones don't last as long as old ones, they are much more weaker and it's true that their batteries don't last as long as they should. Still I don't feel bad using a smartphone. There are much worse things happening in the world too than the development of phones..

  8. I have to agree that new phones are released too often, compared to the time people use them. I just bought a smartphone a few weeks ago, so I probably won’t have to buy a new one for a long time. What comes to recycling the old one, I’m one of those guys who keeps their old phones in their drawers. Even though new phones are easier to break, if you happen to drop them on the floor or something, they’re still pretty tough. But I think it’s still a good idea to keep your old phone as a backup plan, if something bad happens. I personally like having internet and everything on my phone, but what I noticed when I got my phone was that the sim card was smaller than the one I had had before. That was disappointing because I had to order a new one, and wait for a while before being able to use my phone.

  9. Nowdays, people have lot of different kind of phones. I think that phones are released too often. Good thing about releasing new phones is that new phones offers new kind of features. Sometimes phones have useless applications which people don't need. The good phone can send text messages and make phone calls, also the internet is sometimes important.

  10. I have been tree phone during my life and I don't understand why some people buy a new phone each and every year. Phones contain a lot of hazardous waste that is dangerous to the environment.

I haven't thought that I will buy a new phone before my old one will break. I'm agree with you Panu that this is a good way to save money and environment too.
