Internet piracy

There's been a lot of discussion about internet piracy. I don't see piracy as a bad thing because most of the people downloading stuff wouldn't buy it, though it isn't morally right. One thing a downloader could do is to buy the stuff he downloaded if he liked it. Most downloaders only use/watch the material because it's free. I personally think that taking internet piracy down isn't gonna really make the situation better. Piracy can actually give a little more credit for the material producers because more people can see the material because it has been uploaded free somewhere. Though when people download there is always loss in money for the producers. I believe that piracy will give fame for the producers.

Piracy is illegal in Finland. Uploading material in which you don't have rights is punished in some cases. Downloading is also illegal, but I only in one case have heard that someone got punished from downloading. I think that downloading shouldn't be punished. In my opinion it's okay if you download something for your own use. When you share something it's the situation where you break the copyrights.

One question for piracy is that should it be legal to download old material at some point. When something comes to the age that it has been forgotten and hardly being sold it won't damage anyone if it's downloaded. I think that it would make stuff more spread. That would also give fame to producers of course.

Piracy has been talked as a big problem and it takes from hundreds dollars to millions dollars from the producers. If it really would be that big problem, all the world famous musicians wouldn't be flying their private jets and buying new mansions every other year. Also I think that a method for antipiracy would had been made, such as share proof discs or something which would make the sharing impossible.

  2. Yes, that is good. This internet piracy issue is not just about downloading material as it becomes evident in the text. We are in a breaking point concerning how people buy things and more precisely in which form. I can speak only for myself but if I was to buy a bluray movie, it would take a marvelous movie to get me to do that. However, people don't just watch the excellent movies, they watch all kinds of movies. Thus, taking a 20-euro risk every time one wants to watch a movie (except of course renting a movie) is more than people are willing to take. Euphemistically speaking, the price of one DVD or bluray disc is far too high. Moreover, where do we put all the movies if we watch 50 movies in a year on average? It means 500 DVD covers in a decade, which means 6 meters of shelf space and a whole lot of dust.

What I mean to say with this is that we need to start selling movies on lower prices in the Internet. It's very easy to pay for the movie in your online bank and then download it on your PC or whatever your device is. It only requires space on the hard drive. I cannot be sure whether people would buy more movies, but that would surely decrease illegal downloading.

  3. In my opinion the developer of the game or the creator of a song should get paid. He or she or even big group of people has worked really hard to bring new content for people to enjoy and they should get paid for their work. Most this hurts smaller producers who don't have that much money and who could have taken big loan to produce stuff.

  5. I think that downloading music and games is wrong because selling the copies is the only way to make profit from their products. Movies are a whole different thing because DVDs and bluerays are just a way to maximise the profit of the movie. The real profit is gained from the theaters. This would propably rise the quality of the movies because they'd have to persuade the folks to watch the movies in the theaters.
It was a good point that piracy gives fame to the product. For example HBO was proud that their TV series Game of Thrones was the most downloaded TV series. That proved its popularity and the series continued further on to the next seasons.
