Bottled
water is collected from natural springs or it can be just purified tap
water. In countries where there isn’t clean enough tap water, bottled
water is used instead. In the last few decades bottled water consumption
has grown exponentially; mainly in countries where clean tap water is
available. For example, in the United States, where bottled water
consumption is one fourth of the global consumption, a bottle of water
costs about $3, while the equivalent amount of tap water costs only one
cent. In my opinion, something doesn’t add up here.
So
what is this new trend? Why is bottled water so popular? You might say
that it’s convenient to carry a bottle of water with you, but isn’t it
more convenient to carry a bottle filled up with tap water with nearly
no cost at all, and you wouldn’t have to buy another bottle every time
you finish one. Here we see another issue with this. When people buy new
bottles all the time, a lot of plastic will go to waste if the bottles
aren’t recycled.
In Finland bottled water hasn’t become so popular and I think it never will, because we have so clean tap water here.
I agree that something is wrong in this! The environment suffers and besides on our biology lesson we were told that bottled water is actually unhealthy compared to normal tap water because the water can include lots of different bacteria. And true what you're saying, why can't we just use the same bottle for a while and fill it with water over and over again. It would be both healthier and friendlier to the environment. But no, some people just go to the shop every single day and buy that ugly 3 dollars water bottle with "dirty" water. I don't understand.
ReplyDeleteIt surely is a trend. Drinking soda or some other bottled beverage has become a normal way of showing that one is, let's put it this way, sociable person who can afford a bottled drink whether it be just water or something else. Moreover if a bottle of water costs 3 bucks, it is more expensive than a can of cola or sprite. The same trend can also be found in food. Let's take chicken for instance, the meat of which in some crappy sauce costs less than just the meat al natural. This makes us think, doesn't it? The more produced the product the cheaper it is, right? Wrong. That is just as you two say. It is a way of creating illusions for the customers who are just curious to try anything new, and before all, go with the flow. In other words, this is just using the curiosity of human nature in someone else's benefit. To sum up, DRINK TAP WATER!
ReplyDeleteI also agree with this text, it is insane that in countries where they have clean tap water people still need to buy expensive and less eco-frienldy bottled water just because it has becomed a trend. I somehow understand the need of bottled water in the developing countries, but making it as a trend for the developed country people is stupid. Why is it such a big difference to carry bottled water instead of cola bottle? If you don't want drink sugary lemonade go ahead and get a bottle of tap water instead of expensive bottled water. By making this choice you will do a favor to the nature and you also can carry good conscience.
ReplyDeleteI agree! When I was living in Spain we had to buy the bottled water because the tap water weren`t drinkable. And I hated it!
ReplyDeleteWe bought always these big bottles of water (5 liters) and they were so clumsy and heavy. It was annoying to try pour a glass of water when half of the water was everywhere but not in that glass.
Here in Finland it´s so much easier just to drink straight from the tap.
