This week’s Saturday was a dream day to everyone who likes to shop in flea markets. I started my day by waking up at half past six and then went to town (Jyväskylä) by bus at ten past eight. The first flea market opened at nine o’clock so I had to wait in the freezing winter morning quite a while. But it was worth it because it was the 1euro day at UFF second hand. So every cloth cost only one euro! I found seven garments (two dresses, three cardigans, a men’s shirt for lazy days and one t-shirt). I was lucky to find some garments which were made in Finland, they are so good quality even though there were a few things that I have to repair and make them look a little more fashionable.
After UFF I went to Fida International.
There was a sale too, 50% off on every cloths. There I wound one cardigan,
skirt and scarf. They coasted me 3, 5 euros so the days total costs were 10.5
euros and with that I got TEN garments. I wonder what I could have gotten if I
would have gone to Gina Tricot or Only to shop. Not much I think.
It isn't very expensive to shop your
cloths at flea markets. In my opinion when you shop in ordinary clothing stores
you just need money. Everything you need is put right in front of you so it is
easy to buy what is fashionable at the moment. When you try to find clothes at
flea markets you need less money but much more time and patience. You need to
train your eyes and mind by visiting different flea markets. This way you learn
that what garments are your style, what the normal price level is (so you will
not be scammed) and how you identify good quality. It takes time but after
couple of mistakes you will be able to find cloths (and more) which are quite
unique, cheap and suitable for the environment.
That's cool! I also definitely flag for flea markets. I don't understand people who are like "Ewwww, how can you buy used clothes? That's so disgusting". I mean what's the big deal with it? Maybe they don't have washing machines or something...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think it's awesome to find cool clothes with much lower prices. Sometimes I have even found the same shirt I've been staring in a shop but of course with a fivefold smaller price. At flea markets where young people go, there are usually lots of almost unused items too, because we youngsters often have a lot of clothes, which are used only a few times and then they end up in the back of the closet. I admit I have way too many of these too.
So why not help the world a little and recycle at flea markets? Or if that's not your thing at all but you still want to get rid of your stuff, you can at least put your old garments to Unicef's collection to help someone else, instead of just throwing everything away. Your "last season's sweater" can be the best thing they're ever had for some little girl or boy on the other side of the earth :-)
It's awesome that people can find so cheap clothes! Flea markets are very good choise especially for people who are not so rich or they are in a difficult economic situation. I would like to buy my clothes from flea markets but I don't know where is good flea markets. Can somebody help me and told where i can find flea markets? Very good topic Ronja and I am agree with Elina! :)
ReplyDeleteI am plannning to do one of my blogtexts about the flea markets in Muurame and Jyväskylä. It just takes little more effort to go everywere and take pictures, and of course I must talk with the owners first before taking fotos. But I think that I will manage :) I try to get it done like let say in two-three weeks. But of course I can tell the names and locations of all the flea markets that I know at the moment to you at school :)
ReplyDeleteSo nice! A few years ago I used to go also very often to flea markets. For real you can find some very good stuff there, and so cheap too! For example if you're searching for some special thing and you just feel that you can't find it ANYWHERE, I would recommend to go to a flea market and search. Someone's trash can be another's treasure!
ReplyDeleteAnd as Mira said, it's really good to go to a flea market if you have a bad economic situation. Of course the flea markets are also very nice for rich people too. But it's really handy I think! Plus of course probably the best part: it's a great way to save the environment. Good text Ronja, I really liked and I think that second hand stuff can sometimes be as good as new stuff, sometimes even better :)
I also flag for flea markets and I think that flea markets are really good way to recycle and protect nature... Last summer I found many good quality clothes from flea markets and I Even took my own clothes for sale. That was a good way to earn some money to myself. Ronja I really liked your text! It was easy to read and it had a point. I really wait forvard to your next blog text! If you ever start a blog I defitinely want to follow it! Now I just would like to go to flea markets and shop cheap, good quality clothes.... :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be so nice to write a text about my and Tatu's flea market finds. I mean all the household goods that we have bought. I could share some tips and take pictures of the best finds. But there's a problem...they are wrapped in newspaper somewhere in the boxes waiting to move (hopefully during the summer). I'm trying to come up with some ideas and hopefully I can write a text during next week :)
ReplyDeleteI have had this fear for flea markets because as a child we never went to flea markets. My parents weren't into flea markets at all so I somehow got an impression that they are sort of "bad" places. But as I've grown up I've so many stories what kind of wonderful clothes you can find there and how affortable they are. Still I'm not running around in every flea market but I would like to go there more often and get use to them. It's just so hard to start because I don't know where to start and where are all the good flea markets.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion flea markets are great figment. They will save money when you can buy used clothing whom still are in good condition. And of course it is economical choice to buy clothing from flea market.
ReplyDeleteI have often thought that would be nice to visit some flea market but I don't know anyone a good place.
Couple of weeks a go I visited in one flea market in Jyväskylä because my sister was selling clothes in there. I was positively surprised how much people there was and they really bought those things. I also found there one good movie BUT I didn't have money. I would definitely visit in flea markets more often and my sister is a huge "fan" of flea markets so maybe she could recommend some flea markets in Jyväskylä for me.
ReplyDeleteWhen the clothes that I've bought don't fit me anymore, I usually take them to the UFF collection. I should favor the idea of flea markets because you can get money in return to your clothes but Im comfortable with the idea of that the clothes are going to the poor peole in Africa or Asia. I don't often shop in thrift shops but when I do I am surprised about the finds. The clothes really are very fashionable and good.
