Nowadays we are often told to use public transport to avoid the global warming. When we cut down our own driving and use public transport instead, we don't produce so much greenhouse gases which is good for the environment.
I think public transport is a very good option if it's working properly like it does in Helsinki for example. In Helsinki it doesn't cost too much and it's quite fast and reliable. There's also quite good connections from one place to another. But when the public transport isn't working properly it's annoying to hear those comments about how much you can do good for the environment by using it. Like here in Jyväskylä's area the public transport doesn't work as it should.
For example if you need to get from Muurame to Jyväskylä there's normally only two busses in hour that go to Jyväskylä which is too little. Normally the travel takes twice or even triple the time which it takes when you drive with your own car. And on top of all that, it costs twice the amount it should cost judging by the functioning of it.
So on my opinion if there's a need (and I think there is) to reduce our driving with our own cars, there needs to be made an improvement in Jyväskylä.

But there is also another view for this problem. I once talked with one person who was becoming a bus driver and she told that it's not only Jyväskylän liikenne's fault that prices are high. It's because people don't use public transport enough and if they would have lower prices they would make loss. But yeah I still think that Jyväskylän liikenne needs improvements and prices are high no matter what.
ReplyDeleteWord! It's crazy that we are supposed to pay almost 5 euros only for the bus if we want to go to Jyväskylä to do something. Of course usually everyone needs to come home too, so it's almost 10 euros just for the trips. In my opinion that's way too much, because that money could be put in much nicer things too.
ReplyDeleteI also understand the fact, which Sofia mentioned. It's true that they can't afford having lower prices, because public doesn't use their services enough. There is a huge problem there, because they need to get more customers to lower their prices, but they're not gonna get any with the current prices... Hopefully someone smart will figure this unpleasant issue out :-)
True. Let us look at some numbers. As a private car owner, I like to think that there is something good about having a car. Every time I fill up the tank it costs me about 90€. With that amouont of money I get roughly 55 litres of highly flammable substance that is one of the origines of all the carbon dioxide in our breathing air, and it takes me roughly 700 km further. Considering those two numbers, every kilomtre costs about 12.8 cents. Now, if we look at the distance between Muurame and JKL, on my car, the trip costs about 2.56€ and in summer even less. Usually there are more than one person in a bus and if you catch my drift, that makes the 5-euro trips a legalized robbery.
ReplyDeleteTrue dat! I think it's almost ridiculous to pay 10€ to get to Jyväskylä and back to Muurame by bus. And like Mika said, it's cheaper to go by your own car. And more comfortable!:)
ReplyDeleteI think it's weird that here the prices are so high. If you compare other towns, there the prices are lower. I don't really believe that people don't use enough public transport here. I think public transport is almost only way to go Jyväskylä from here if you are under 18 and that's why especially young people use that. It would be cool if Jyväskylän liikenne would drop their prices lower for one week. Then we would see if people started to use public transport more.
ReplyDeleteI also think that bus prices in Jyväskylä's area are to high. I go from Muurame to Jyväskylä almost every week and that's why I have bought bus-card where you can download trips. Then the prices are little lower when you buy it. They should reduce prices, because everyone would agree with that. Then people would use more public transport.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you that prices are high! That's why I use public transport only if I don't have any other ride to Jyväskylä or somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteAnd in addition from here to Jyväskylä it can take 45 minutes if that bus goes "scenic route". With own car it takes only 15-20 minutes. Crazy! Who wants to use bus anymore?
If prices would be lower, I could use more public transport.
That's true. The prices here in Jyväskylä are about four times bigger than in Helsinki and that's insane. If I have to go from Muurame to Jyväskylä I usually go by car because that's faster and cheaper. And what comes to the global warming we need to start using public transport more. In Helsini the public transport is working but here in Jyväskylä it's far away from that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you, the prices are way too high. And I have understood that the Finnish Government supports financially the public transport of Helsinki more than other cities´ so that´s why the prices are much higher here than in Helsinki. And in my opinion that is just stupid.
ReplyDeleteThe prices here are just ridiculous! That's why I really don't like to go by bus. I remember when I was in Vantaa and me and my friend took a bus to Helsinki. It took around 45 minutes to get there and it cost only 2 euros. I was so amazed, I didn't even know that going by bus could be that cheap! Sure I understand that there are more people living in the region of Helsinki and so on, but still...
