In my opinion, school lunch here in Muurame is usually quite fine. There is the main dish, salad and bread, so it should be quite easy to fill one's plate like it should be filled. The sad truth is that many kids in school are so picky, that they don't go to lunch at all because "there is nothing to eat there" or if they do, they eat a spoonful of rice and that's it. This isn't good at all. Everyone, especially teenagers, should eat normal food during the day, and enough of it, instead of going to the corner shop to get something unhealthy because "school food sucks". I don't think so. I totally get that there are some foods which aren't so delicious, and I'm not a fan of theirs either, but still I always eat what they offer.
What is the solution for this problem then? Maybe it was better if there was two different dishes and then of course the veggie option, like they have in Jyväskylä. Then there most likely would be at least something that those picky youngsters could put in their mouth. Then they would maybe see, that it's much easier to keep up in classes when one is not so hungry and tired. However, the situation right now is what it is, so please, don't be too picky. Instead of that we should be grateful to have food regardless of what the dish is that day :)

I can agree with Elina because I was once too a picky student but then I realised that studying is much easier with a full stomach than an empty one even if the food isn't that good on that particular day.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about our school food is the vegetarian food in my opinion because it saves many times the day when the normal food isn't my favourite.
Yeap, I agree! I also often count on the vegetarian food, although I'm not actually a true-vegetarian. But even though I think our school food is quite good, I must admit that I'm a bit jealous for those who gets to eat their school lunch in Viitaniemi, for example. :D Like Elina just told, there are few different dishes so there is definitely something "good enough" for everyone. I think you all have seen the posters in our school eatery that told how much food is thrown in the trash can during a week. I don't think that in Jyväskylä they throw so much food away because they are able to choose more freely what they are going to eat. And in Viitaniemi for example, there are (also?) students who are making the school lunch (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure!) so they don't need to spend so much money to the people who work there. Consequently they can use more money to the actual food. Still and all, I think our school food is just fine even though there are some (very few) dishes I gladly don't eat, but then I can choose the vegetarian food.
DeleteI concur with others. It is a pity that some people can't appreciate school food, it is free and tasty as well. There seems to be some differences in the menus between Muurame and Korpilahti. Like that thing with noodles and chicken that is served in Muurame, I can't remember eating it in school before I came here. :) I hope picky students would at least bring their own food to school instead of just skipping lunch and buying something with sugar in it.
ReplyDeleteI also think that the school food here in Muurame is quite good. Sure it could be a little better, but overall I'm pleased with it. I eat it every day, and every day it fills my stomach. Especially in 8 hour days, there's no way I could survive without the school food. And if it happens that the food doesn't taste so good I just take some bread with it. Still I might sometimes get hungry, but by the time that happens, the last lesson is already going on. I hope those picky kids see that there's no way of surviving a long day without the proper nutrition.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of you. I'm happy that we can get food in our school even if it's not so good every day. There are always some another option.
ReplyDeleteI eat food in our school every day even though it's not my favourite food.
When I was at junior high school I always complained how bad-tasting food we have in our school. But it's not true. Now I can look back and laugh at myself how stupid I was.
Good points. What about all the food that goes to waste? The amount of food at school is, as far as I know, pretty decent but grocery stores are the worst. They ( including me acouple of years back as I worked in one) throw away so much food that it is sometimes impossible to watch it happen. The worst example is bread. Everyone knows that the best before date does not mean the bread is useless, not by a long shot. Still the store is not allowed to sell it any more and they have to throw it away. What should be done? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI really had to comment this text again because of the fact that Mika just pointed out. I work at the local grocery store and I remember how I had to drain more than fifty liters of milk in the sewer because it was ONE day over the best day before date. Few hours after that date and it has to be thrown away?! I was shocked.
DeleteI kind of understand that the store can't sell outdated food, but still it is a huge waste. I mean, if the food isn't molded or anything, why it has to be thrown away.....? There are millions of people who would be glad and thankful to have that one-day-old-food. In Finland these "fresh" foodpackages are given to the people who can't afford it by buying it from stores, so why couldn't the "old" food be also given for those who are willing to take it? I have seen very well-looking bread, milk, yoghourt and even fruits which have been thrown away.. They could be given for the poor people with a big sticker on, which says that the food is outdated by few days so they could choose whether they eat it or not.
I agree with you guys. It's a pity that kids don't eat school lunch every day. In Jyväskylä there are far more better options than here in Muurame when it comes to food in school, but I’m quite pleased with the food here too. When you're hungry you eat almost whatever.
ReplyDeleteActually we’re so lucky to have a free school lunch in Finland. For example in the US the students have to bring their own food to school or eat in the cafeteria where eating costs. And besides there are only served fast food like pizzas and hamburgers. In Finland lunch is also healthy. Every day there are available some good salad in our canteen. So it’s really up to you if you want to eat a healthy lunch and then be able to study well, or do you prefer starving in hunger and not eating the lunch.
And something about that food that goes waste. I don't get it either. In school kids should take as much food as they are able to eat. In grocery stores, they should sell the 'old' food in a lower price than they sell the fresh food. Or like Mirna pointed out, they could give the 'old' food to the poor.
I used to be quite picky as well. I also followed my friends and if they didn't eat the food I didn't eat it, either. Now when I'm in high school I've really learned to respect school food because of the long days and classes. I simply couldn't concentrate on the classes at all without eating! I've aslo noticed that the food is actually good. There might not be my favorite food every single day but there is always something to eat.
ReplyDeleteI also used to take the food on my plate even though I wasn't meant to eat it. Now I understand that was stupid and didn't make any sense. Nowadays I avoid throwing any food to the trash. I really think we all are old enough to understand what is the right thing to do when it comes to school lunch. Kids in junior high are usually very picky but we are older and wiser, aren't we? (;
I also like that we have free school lunch in Finland and most of the time our school lunch tastes good... Im also happy that we dont have to have packed lunches from home, because little snack like apple and bread dont keep hunger away whole day. But our school lunch does. Its also nice that we have veggie food also because sometimes veggie food is much better than "normal" food. I eat school lunch every day even if i dont like it so much everytime. Because it is much cheaper to eat in school than buy food from store...
ReplyDeleteI'm agree with you.
ReplyDeleteWe are privileged here in Finland when we can eat free school lunch. For that reason all of us could be more grateful sometimes. It is good to remember that everyone has not this entitlement...
I agree that most of the teenagers are too picky nowadays. I think that they are used to get almost everything that they want. Parents should teach to taste every food before they start to complain. My personal opinion is that the school food is not very good because for example, potatoes is often raw and it doesn't taste very good. Sometimes the school food is not your favorite food but it is food and you can eat it and you have to eat something to fill your stomache.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think that teenagers in here are too picky because the food in here is usually good. Okey, in our school sometimes the food is really bad and those days I eat only a little bit. But most of the food is okay and sometimes it's really good. Everyone have their own favourites here. Your blog was good and the things you said are a real problem, not only here. It is also a big problem here in Finland. Teenagers and older people should not be so picky nowadays
ReplyDeleteI agree with you all geezers. I like the school food, but it would still be very good that the school would have two different food choice. Then all students could even eat something at school and students are more satisfied with lunch.
ReplyDeleteIn Finland, we can still be glad that we get food in school every school day. For example in Italy, students bring their own lunch to school and in developing countries, not all of youngsters can not even get to school. We should respect our situation and not to cry for kinder potatoes.
I agree, there should be two different food to choice, usually school food is quite good, but sometimes it really sucks. For exempel potatoes are raw.
ReplyDeleteBut it is good thing that we can eat free at school.
Thank you for this text, that is very good.
I concur with others. If we look at English school food... It sucks! Here in Finland, we can be proud of our school food system! It's free, healthy and food tastes good. It depends on the students' attitude and how they react of school food. But in my opinion, Muurame's school food could be put more salt.
